Example 1 — Ratio

Question

The ratio of the number of blue pens to red pens is 3 : 5. There are 24 blue pens. How many red pens are there?

Solution:

3 units = 24 blue pens

1 unit = 24 ÷ 3 = 8 pens

5 units = 5 × 8 = 40 red pens

Answer: 40 red pens

Common mistake: Some students add 3 and 5 first even though the question already gives the value of the blue pens.

Example 2 — Percentage

Question

A bag costs $80. During a sale, its price is reduced by 25%. What is the sale price?

Solution:

25% of $80 = 25 ÷ 100 × 80 = $20

Sale price = $80 − $20 = $60

Answer: $60

Common mistake: Do not stop at the discount amount. The question asks for the final sale price.

Example 3 — Average

Question

The average mass of 4 parcels is 6 kg. A fifth parcel is added, and the new average mass becomes 7 kg. What is the mass of the fifth parcel?

Solution:

Total mass of 4 parcels = 4 × 6 = 24 kg

Total mass of 5 parcels = 5 × 7 = 35 kg

Mass of fifth parcel = 35 − 24 = 11 kg

Answer: 11 kg

Common mistake: Students sometimes subtract the averages instead of comparing the total masses.
